This is a charming example of the work of the late Gordon Hope Wyllie RSW. A lovely man, we represented him during the last decade of his life and held many successful shows in the years either side of the millennium. He felt very strongly for the fate of these croft houses that dotted the coastline around the Western Isles of Scotland. For a time as the local depopulation left many of them derelict and others were bought by city dwellers as holiday homes he began to produce this series of paintings to record them for future generations. The habit of the newcomers at the time of covering over the traditional whitewashed walls with garish, supposedly ‘jollier’ colours particularly offended him.
